violent prophets

hum...so i kinda want to start a like "deep" conversation here, but i don't know how at the moment.
ok here's some little info i read today in 1 Kings. It's the only thing I'm reading/learning about thats a little more general.
the prophets were kinda...mean,to put it nicely, during that time period. So Elija comes along and proves that all the Baal prophets either don't know what they're talking, or do know and are just lieing to all the people. so after he proves that with God's fire, he slaughters all of them!! that's like 50 people!! was reform impossible? A long while after that Elisha is now the prophet. Elijah just died. Some kids come around and make fun of his shiny head so he sicks a couple bears on them! Here's my reaction while reading "that's not very nice"
So i'm just wondering...why were the prophets so seemingly violent? I mean Hinckley may prove that the pope is wrong in something but he doesn't have him killed for it.
I don't get it.

I totally understand where you're coming from and I don't get it either.

However, about the bear eating the "kids"...there was a discussion about that in one of Brother Lane's classes...those "kids" were mostly teenagers and young men in their 20s...although that doesn't necessarily justify the act it's something to chew on...

Oh, (this just popped into my head) and the prophets might not necessarily have wanted to destroy the people, but it could have been God's will in the fact that He may have been testing the obedience of those He called and who are we to question His will? (The Bible doesn't necessarily elaborate on every little thing...)

Either that or there's some messed up stuff going on, but really I'd rather believe the first theory even though it may rub the wrong way against my personal beliefs of right and wrong.

There's always some kind of purpose...

First off I just have to laugh the bear story is one of my Dad's favs (he is bald ehehe)
Anyway the prophets lived in a different time back then. I mean to them stoning or crucifixing (it was robbers next to christ) a person for doing someting wrong was perfectly humane, god has different ways of teaching us and lets just all be grateful that he doesnt send firey snakes upon us when we are not being so good. I know i dont mock my dad out of fear of being eaten by bears... no wait i still do i have to keep an eye out you know.
Really it is different times things have changed and humanity is very different. to tell you the truth he probably doesn't bother anymore because people would make it into some phenomenon and not god acting against his enemies.
Cant you see this in a newspaper. "Bears attack children on camping trip" there not going to add because they were mocking the prophet because he was bald. the world is for the worse these days and miracles dont hold as much power because of it.
So my opinion god changes as the people change we dont learn maths the same way my mum did in school so why wouldnt we learn the lessons of life different. Yes prophets of old were kind of mean but they were doing their calling in the way they knew best for the people of their time.

I think we can look to the Book of Mormon to gain some understanding of this. In Ether, Jesus talks about those who mock others are fools. (Ether 12:26) If that's the case, then maybe the bear story is an overexaggerated example of why you shouldn't mock. I mean, look at Nephi... he wanted nothing to do with killing Laban, yet he did. Ugh... loosing breakfast is making it difficult for me to think clearly.

I stay that death is the only adventure. Well, I guess I am not the first to say it. Captain Hook beat me too it, but I like it. So these Bible men are just sending them on an adventure.

Muhlstein brought up the eternal perspective. Dieing really isn't a bad thing ya know? just another step. for the bad it's not a happy step, for the good it's a nice upward step.
And as shaleen said, who are we to judge what God does? I just have to live with the justification that God doesn't have to justify himself to us.
